If you have an orthodontic retainer, then you need to clean and care for it regularly if you want to maintain a top-notch smile. This is because your retainer keeps your teeth in the proper position, and if the retainer is damaged, it won’t be able to do its job. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Stacee Burson, would like to tell you all about how to clean and care for your retainer so you know how to do so. You should:

-Rinse your retainer regularly: All you need to do is run it under lukewarm water each time you take it out of the mouth. This can help wash away bacteria and reduce your chances of having plaque buildup on the appliance.

-Deeply clean your retainer often: It’s best to deeply clean your retainer by brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap. You can also use a denture brush or denture cleaner. Whatever you do, don’t use products with abrasives. Abrasives can scratch and damage the retainer.

-Keep your retainer in a safe place: If you keep it in a safe place, you reduce your chances of losing it. Make sure the safe place isn’t a hot environment or in a low, easy-to-reach spot. The hot environment can melt the retainer and the low spot can make it accessible to the family pet. For some reason, dogs love to chew retainers.
