Gum disease is a dental issue that forms when the plaque on your teeth continues to live on your teeth and irritate your gums. Eventually, it can result in loose and lost teeth if it’s left untreated. Unfortunately, your smile is more susceptible to this disease if you have braces because it’s more difficult to remove the plaque from your teeth on a regular basis. So, to help you prevent this dental issue while you work toward your perfect smile, our Orthodontics by Dr. Burson orthodontic team encourages you to do the following things:

Brush your teeth

Make sure you brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Brushing helps remove the plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and it also kills the harmful bacteria and germs that can also create tooth decay. When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Do your best to brush thoroughly along the gumline but be gentle as you do so.

Floss your smile

Flossing is vital if you want to prevent gum disease. Flossing cleans the crevices of your smile and removes the plaque and food particles that reside there. Make sure you floss at least once a day and you are gentle as you floss near the gums. If you need help flossing with braces, we will be happy to give you some tips.

Visit your dentist

Visiting your dentist for a dental cleaning is the best thing you can do to prevent gum disease. During this appointment, the team will scrape the plaque off your smile and will provide special treatment if needed.

If you do these four things, you will be able to avoid the development of gum disease in Texarkana, Texas. We care for you and your smile, and we want you to have the best oral health possible.
